Green Mountain Access High-Speed Internet Frequently Asked Questions
Thinking of making the switch to High-Speed Internet Service? Here are answers to some frequently asked questions from customers thinking about making the switch.
What is DSL?
DSL is a high-speed, digital broadband technology that supports High-Speed Internet connections at speeds up to 100** times faster than dial-up. High-Speed Internet service is installed on your existing telephone line and enables you to have an "always on" Internet connection, meaning your computer or Local Area Network can be connected to the Internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and without any dialing. With high-speed Internet service, you can talk on the phone while surfing the web, checking e-mail, or sending a fax - all over a single telephone line.

What do I need to get started?
High-Speed Internet Service requires the use of a special DSL modem (like the BEC DSL modem pictured above), as well as an Ethernet Card in your computer. Customers can rent or purchase the DSL modem from Green Mountain Access. This Modem will support Ethernet connections for Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Apple Macintosh computers. In addition, since high-speed Internet Service signals are sharing the line with regular telephone signals, a DSL micro filter must be used to block the signal so that it does not interfere with other analog devices that are sharing the same line (telephones, fax machines, Caller ID boxes, alarm systems, satellite television receivers, etc.). Not to worry, all of this equipment is provided by Green Mountain Access in your self installation kit, complete with easy to follow instructions.
Why is High-Speed Internet Service better than dial-up?
If you are still on dial-up, high-speed Internet Service will drastically improve your Internet experience. With download speeds up to 100** times faster than dial-up, you can surf the web, send and receive e-mail, or download files faster than ever before. Converting to high-speed Internet Service will also free up your telephone line, allowing you to simultaneously use your telephone line and surf the Internet.
How can I save money on my High-Speed Internet Service?
Our standard High-Speed Internet Service is competitively priced at just $42.95* and is actually less than most cable modem services in Vermont. Unlike a dial-up connection, you will not incur per minute charges while connected to the Internet via your High-Speed Internet connection. You can also save more on your High-Speed Internet service by subscribing to a Clearly Connected Bundle, or to a qualifying Green Mountain Long Distance Service calling plan. High-Speed - Lite is our new introductory level high-speed Internet Service designed for the casual user that wants the benefit of high-speed Internet Service, but doesn't need the higher speeds of our standard high-speed Internet service.
